INTRODUCTION

The Altona Lacrosse Club was founded in 1964.  Our clubrooms are located on PJ Lynch Reserve at Paisley Park.  We are the only lacrosse club in Victoria that has full use of its facilities 12 months of the year. The Club has four lacrosse specific playing fields, one of which can be used for night games, and a box lacrosse court that also has floodlights.  Our grounds are among the best in the State and Victorian and Australian representative sides often ask to train there.

Altona Lacrosse Club has Level 2 Good Sports accreditation. This accreditation recognises that the Club promotes a responsible attitude towards alcohol and that it provides a safe environment for players, members, families and supporters.

In 2009 the Club attained great on-field success with its Men's State League side exceeding all expectations in its move up from Division 1 and the Women's A Grade side only losing 3 games for the entire year.   Malcolm MacGregor and Troy Martin played in the Australian Under 21 side in South Korea whilst Vicki Ryan played in the girls Under 21 side in Prague.  Alan Lewer, Rod Maher, Anthony Cliffe, Damian Cliffe, Simon Duke and Mark Gregson made the successful Victorian Indoor side.  Kaitlin Hughes and Shana Kukucka made the Girls' Under 15 State sides with Kaitlin captaining the winning side, Victoria Fire.  Campbell Mackinnon captained the Boys Under 15 Western Metro Side whilst teammates Mira Millard, Tyler Fiteni and Jai Patterson joined him in the side.

In 2010, the Club will field Senior Men’s teams in State League, Division 1 and Division 3 we will field Women's teams in State League, A Grade and B Grade.  We expect to have sides in all junior grades for boys and girls from the age of 6 and up.  We also field two mixed Under 12’s sides.

Men and boys play Saturdays.  Women and girls play Sundays.  During the season (which normally runs from April - September), our canteen is open on Saturdays from 8.30 am.  A healthy evening meal is also provided most Saturday nights at a very reasonable price.  All club members and their families and friends are welcome.  The Club has a TV with DVD and a large screen data projector, a video game system, stereo system and an air hockey/pool table for everyone to enjoy.

Our player fees are among the cheapest in Victoria.  To keep fees low we have a social committee that holds numerous functions throughout the year to raise revenue.

LEVEL THREE ACCREDITATION

IN GOOD SPORTS PROGRAM

The Altona Lacrosse Club is displaying commitment to responsible alcohol management with an application for Level Three accreditation under the Australian Drug Foundation’s Good Sports program.

Good Sports is the first nationwide alcohol management program of its kind and is supported by Vic Health, the Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) and the Alcohol Education Rehabilitation Foundation. The program was developed following research conducted by the Australian Drug Foundation which indicated that by introducing responsible alcohol management policies, clubs were able to improve membership and enhance viability.

The club is determined to meet the criteria required for the Level Three accreditation.

We now have a written alcohol management policy which includes the sale of low alcohol drinks and soft drinks and a safe transport strategy to ensure our members get home safely. We will provide food when serving alcohol and we will not have an emphasis on alcohol for player awards or fundraising, functions and prizes.

We are confident our efforts will continue to improve the environment at the Club. We are working to ensure the Altona Lacrosse Club is a great place to play and socialise for all members of our community.

The club will be regularly monitored to ensure we comply with the program. This is the responsibility of all members to make sure we do the right thing while we’re enjoying ourselves and having fun.

For more information about the accreditation program speak to Mark Lewer.

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

Junior Grades

We have two mixed sides for children between the ages of 6 and 12.  This grade is non-contact so your child only needs a stick, mouthguard, shorts and suitable footwear to play.  Under 12 games start at 9:30 am on a Saturday and generally go for about an hour.  Under 14 boys play at 9:30 am on Saturdays.  This grade has some checking and contact so the players wear protective gloves and helmets.  Under 16 is a little more contact and play at 11 am on Saturday.  Under 18s have similar rules to seniors so it is full contact.  The protective gear means lacrosse players are far less likely to get injured than players of many other sports.

Girls start in Under 11s however many of our girls play both Under 11 and/or Under 12.   Both these grades are non-contact.  Mouthguard are compulsory and jewellery must not be worn whilst playing.  Eye goggles are optional.  These requirements are the same in all women's grades.

The club understands equipment is a big investment for parents.  The club maintains a small supply of helmets, gloves and sticks to loan to new players until they get their own gear.

Support for Representative Players

The Club encourages all its players to try out for representative sides - even if it is just for the experience of the training.  For those players good enough to make representative sides, the club undertakes fund-raising activities to assist with costs.  The club is known to be very generous in this regard and we have a proud record of State and Australian representatives.  In 2009 we had Australian representatives in Under 21 male and female sides as well as Regional Representatives (including the captains) in Under 15 boys and girls sides.

Club Communication

The Club produces an electronic newsletter every week during the season.  This is emailed to members.  If we do not have your email address please tell a committee member.  If you do not have email then a hard copy can be made available.  This webpage is also regularly updated with the latest news.

INFORMATION FOR OVERSEAS PLAYERS

The Club has only recently started recruiting overseas players.  The players who have come to our happy club previously have certainly enjoyed themselves.  Overseas players are housed with lacrosse families where they are treated as one of the family.  In most cases players are given free accommodation during their stay.  Overseas players are also often provided with jobs to help cover the few expenses they may have (normally going out clubbing with the younger male and female players).  The club can provide contact details of overseas players we have hosted previously to players serious about taking up our offer in the future.

LACROSSE VICTORIA

SENIOR BEST AND FAIREST NIGHT

In a great night for the club Alan Lewer came 5th in the State League Competition Best and Fairest whilst Kailey Ryan kept the Women's A Grade Competition Best and Fairest in the family by winning the Jackson Trophy, just as her sister Vicki did the previous year - surely a unique effort.
